MEET THE TEMPLAR!

The past few weeks have certainly been busy for us. We have seen the launch of our MMO environment (aptly dubbed Big World) and the release of the Guinecean Duelist archetype. As always, even with all the tweaks and fixes and hard work required to release a major milestone, we always have one eye toward the future… and a few team members running forward to make headway on our next release.

 

In this case, that release include the next archetype: the Templar!

 

To understand the Templar, one needs some insight into the holy backstory of the church and their interaction with Confessors:

 

Originally, Mother Church was formed around (and for) the worship of Arkon, Lord of the Sun. The Church had two distinct arms: military and liturgical.

 

There was a massive split after the death of Gaea and the subsequent appearance of the Hunger. This was largely a dogmatic fracture that arose during the Church’s attempt to ascribe a root cause to the menace – and to devise a strategy for dealing with it.

 

The Confessors declared that the Hunger was divine retribution for the sins of mankind; an internal threat that could only be dealt with by purging the disease.

 

The Templars felt that the Hunger was an external threat, caused by something beyond the control of the gods, and that the duty of a devout mortal was to fight it on their behalf.

 

This schism broke the Faith in two, each devoted to a different aspect of Sun worship:

 

Templars, the martial (military) arm of the Church, follow the Path of Light. They ascribe to the belief that the Hunger is a force of darkness, an absence of divinity, and that the goal of civilization is to act as a 'beacon of faith' through thought and action to counter this darkness and, in doing so, to show others the way.

 

Confessors, the liturgical (arcane) arm of the Church, follow the Path of Flame.  They see Sin as the disease which corrupts the body of Man and believe that fighting the 'darkness' or shadow is merely treating the symptoms of this corruption – not the cure. To cure the disease, it must be burned (or excised) from the body. It is an unfortunate truth that sometimes one must remove good flesh with the bad to keep a disease from spreading.

 

As you can guess, that means there is going to be a natural strength (and weakness) built into the interplay between these two classes: Templars and Confessors work well as a pair, but also present a natural counter-balance to each other when opposed.

 

The Templar will join the ranks of the Knight and Myrmidon as a Tank role archetype.

 

In the case of powers and resources, here is where she currently stands:

 

  • Utilize the combo system to give her a series of power combos,
  • Use the pip resource system (similar to Duelist),
  • However, spenders only cost one pip.
  • Have a supercharge similar to the Champion’s Ultimate Warrior which,
  • has a new unmitigable damage type: Holy Damage!

There are a ton of details, of course … but we can dive into those in a future update, as we get further into development.

Crowfall Resource Nodes/ Harvesting Possibilities
